Waterloo, ON – 10 June 2019 – Maerospace Corporation, a global supplier of real-time, predictive analytics to the maritime market, has announced the signing of a global license agreement with Raytheon Canada Limited (RCL) to support the Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces’ science and technology organization, by assuming responsibility for the maintenance, design, engineering, manufacturing and international promotion, sales and deployment of the third generation High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) systems. This Canadian system is one of the few operationally deployed HFSWR radars capable of 200-mile, persistent coverage of a country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The HFSWR technology forms the foundation of – Maerospace’s wide-area Maritime Domain Intelligence initiative to provide enforcement agencies with real-time, persistent surveillance out to the 200 nautical mile EEZ. This ground-breaking technology is the culmination of more than twenty-five years of research and development investment undertaken by DRDC and RCL. A game-changing and complementary tool to provide surveillance capability for Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU), smuggling, ballast dumping and other offshore activities, the Maerospace licensed HFSWR technology is a customer proven, cost-effective solution that enables reconnaissance and effective deployment of enforcement assets, making HFSWR a force multiplier for securing international maritime borders.
HFSWR systems have been successfully deployed in Asia and Europe with the most advanced, 3rd Generation system installed in Canada.
Maerospace plans to extend the HFSWR system’s functionality by integrating its TimeCaster ™ proprietary technology that would add target identification, anomaly detection, and FutureCast™ capabilities, enabling Coast Guards, Navies and Maritime Authorities to enhance their ability to interdict vessels and plan traffic throughout their EEZ.
“Partnering with Maerospace and integrating their innovative capabilities with the current HFSWR will not only augment the technology but will further increase the operational advantage for the customer,” stated Terry Manion, RCL vice president and general manager. “Maerospace was the right fit as both our organizations understand the global need to enhance the capability of maritime awareness security in every sea.”
David Forster, Deputy Director S&T External Relations at DRDC adds, “The Maerospace commitment to the Canadian developed HFSWR technology make this license agreement likely to generate economic benefits for Canadians while continuing the advancement of this world leading maritime surveillance technology.”
According to Maerospace CEO, Eric Meger, “We are truly excited to be working with RCL and DRDC to carry on the historical expansion of this important technology. This is a major advance in our vision to become the global leader in real-time maritime domain awareness. Maerospace is proud to add several key personnel who have worked on this radar for many years to our team. Adding TimeCaster ™ to this technology creates a powerful capability for countries to guard their borders, save lives, protect the environment and enhance trade. We look forward to working with our global customers and partners to provide persistent maritime security monitoring for their EEZ resulting in actionable intelligence to combat the serious problems of illegal fishing, human trafficking, drug smuggling, national security, pollution and port congestion around the world.”
