Maerospace Receives $1MM Award from Canadian Government To Extend Participation in IDEaS Project

News and Events

Waterloo, ON – 17 February 2021 – Maerospace Corporation, a global supplier of real-time maritime intelligence via industry leading radar systems and innovative data analytics, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $1MM contract to participate in phase 1b of the Canadian Government’s “Innovation for Defense Excellence and Security (IDEaS)” defence innovation program. Under the terms of the new contract Maerospace will leverage the accomplishments it achieved during IDEaS phase 1a to develop solutions that further support Canadian defence and security capabilities, such as reduced maritime response times, increased efficiencies, lower costs and reduced personnel risk.

Under the IDEaS phase 1b contract Maerospace will develop an operationally ready “Persistent Multi-Sensor Predictive Platform” that time-synchronizes and correlates data from long-range maritime radar tracks and satellite Automatic Identifier System (S-AIS) data. The platform will take advantage of Maerospace technologies for near-real-time image processing and the company’s PASE™ High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) system.

In addition, Maerospace will extend and refine its previously developed mathematical models to extract tactical information from remote sensing data and develop a browser-based end-user experience to present the integrated sensor data and analytic results to operators. The result will be a turnkey system ready for operational testing that decreases maritime response times, maximizes mission effectiveness, reduces costs and reduces risks to crews.

The planned system can be employed to reduce the amount of purchased sensor data and enable humans to streamline decision-making over enormous areas of ocean. Major sensor sources will be integrated and correlated in a single platform, and results can be either used directly or allocated for further integration with other systems. The system will be expandable to incorporate additional data feeds in the future.

“This IDEaS project will improve our large-scale data extraction algorithms for distinguishing between various tracks of interest, as well as provide a User Interface that can present complex results in an intuitive manner,” reports Brian Franklin, Maerospace’s Chief Technology Officer.

“We are pleased to be selected for the continuation of our innovative development efforts on behalf of Canada’s Department of National Defence,” said Eric Meger, Maerospace CEO. “Increased maritime domain awareness will enhance National Security by monitoring the real-time maritime activity in Canada’s three oceans including the northern waters and the country’s entire Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).”

About IDEaS

IDEaS is a defence innovation program announced in Canada’s defence policy: Strong, Secure, Engaged. It commits the Canadian government to $1.6 billion of investment in innovations for defence and security over the next 20 years. The program is looking for solutions to support the development of defence and security capabilities. IDEaS fosters open innovation by providing creative thinkers with the structure and support to encourage solutions, which will assist in solving some of Canada’s toughest defence and security challenges. IDEaS supports the development of solutions from their conceptual stage, through prototype testing and capability development. The program includes several elements that promote collaboration between innovators, provides developmental resources and opportunities to interact with DND’s science and military members.
