Maerospace Corp Acquires Northern Radar Inc. High Frequency Antenna Systems

News and Events

Waterloo, ON – April 7 2021 – Maerospace Corporation, a global supplier of real-time maritime intelligence via industry leading radar systems and innovative data analytics, is pleased to announce the acquisition of Northern Radar Inc.’s antenna technology. Northern Radar is the recognized world experts in antenna designs for High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) systems and products for high power HF band applications. The addition of antenna products and expertise provides a perfect complement to the existing Maerospace PASE™ HFSWR radar systems.

Northern Radar, located in St. John’s, Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, was established to commercialize the HFSWR technology developed by the late Dr. John Walsh and his team at Memorial University. During its 30+ history, the company has designed, fabricated, built and installed numerous sophisticated antennas systems, including the development and installation of processors and compact antenna systems for oceanographic measurements, HF and low VHF antenna systems, and products for other HF band high-power applications. Northern Radar’s systems have been implemented around the world by clients including Canadian National Defence, and for multi-site projects in Newfoundland, Quebec, Nova Scotia and British Columbia, as well as projects for clients as distant as Sri Lanka and Romania.

President since 1997, Barry Dawe of Northern Radar spoke about the acquisition: “This acquisition unites Canadian HFSWR expertise under a single corporate umbrella and makes perfect sense for both companies. We are excited to become part of the Maerospace family and for the vast new opportunity this opens, including an East Coast Canadian presence close to the ocean environment. Maerospace has filled a void in long-range maritime intelligence with their PASE™Radar and our integrated offering provides the global market a cost-effective, complete solution that reliably covers the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) out to 200 Nautical Miles.”

“We are pleased to welcome Barry and his team into the Maerospace family,” said Maerospace CEO Eric Meger. “Our decision to bring the Northern Radar recognized antenna leadership into Maerospace allows us to consolidate technology and expertise and strengthens our capabilities to supply complete end-to-end systems for single and multi-band applications.”
